Durga Saptashati & The 700 Shlokas

Maa Durga is the creator and the supreme power of the universe, and her victory over the demons is described in the religious text of Durga Saptashati. 700 verses from Markandeya Purana comprise the Durga Saptashati (sapta means seven). Durga Saptashati can be recited anytime but is mostly recited during the time of Dusshera or Navratri

Markandeya Purana was written by Sage Markandeya, and it comprises a total of 900 verses. Out of all the chapters, 13 chapters that include the 700 verses is known as Durga Saptashati. Durga Saptashati is recited during the celebrations of Navratri to honor and seek the blessings of Maa Durga.

Maa Durga is the divine power and energy (Shakti) behind all the energies of the universe. She is also called Maa Chandi, Maha Lakshmi, or Devi Maa by the devotees, as she is the driving force of the Universe.

As per the Hindu legend, a war was waged by Maa Durga against the demons, and this even destroyed the peace. During this time, the gods prayed for the intervention of the supreme power, and Maa Durga then fought the war and retained peace in the universe. The stories and adventures of Devi Maa were retold and are called Durga Saptashati in Northern India, Chandi in the state of West Bengal, and Devi Mahatmya in Southern India.

In Markandeya Purana, Durga Saptashati comprises chapter 81 till chapter 93, a total of 13 chapters. The verses are a collection of tales of heroism of the battle and triumph of the good over the evil. Durga Saptashati mentions that Maa Durga killed various demons like Kaitabha, Raktabija, Shumbha, Nishumbha, etc via various incarnations.
