Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is the celebration of the true form of Lord Vishnu in the form of the most revered fasting story among Hindu religious people. Some people organize this Katha for the fulfillment of the wish, while some others perform it regularly.
The story of Lord Satyanarayan is prevalent in the world. Satyanarayan Vrat Katha has two parts Vrat-worship and Katha. Satyanarayan Vratkatha has been compiled from Rewakhand of Skanda Purana. Another meaning of this is that only Narayan(Lord Vishnu) is the truth in the world, everything else is Maya. God is worshiped in many forms, among them his Satyanarayan form is mentioned in this story. In its original text, about 170 verses are available in the Sanskrit language, which is divided into five chapters.
In different chapters of Vrat Katha, short stories have been told on what kind of problem comes if you do not follow the truth. Therefore, in life, Satya Vrat should be followed with full devotion and firmness. For not doing so, the Lord not only gets offended but also deprives the property and happiness of the person as a punishment. In this sense, this story is a popular and universally accepted religious literature of the prestige of truth in the world. Often this story is recited in the family on the full moon.
Benefits of Satyanarayan Katha
The benefits of the Katha have been discussed in the Vedic scriptures. Those who have observed the fast of Shri Satyanarayan Bhagwan in the previous life got happiness in all respects in the second birth. The old Shatanand duly fasted to Lord Satyanarayan in his previous birth and finally attained salvation by worshiping the Lord in the form of Sudama in the second birth. The Ulkamukh king attained salvation in the form of Dasharatha in the next birth and went to Baikunth Dham. He told that in the next birth, the merchant had attained Baikuntha by the grace of God by ripping his son with a saw. King Tungadhwaj took birth as Manu in the next life and went to Baikunth Dham while worshiping God. The fasting and worship of Lord Satyanarayan free man from all worries, by filling the reserves of wealth and property, finally giving salvation by freeing him from the cycle of birth after birth.
The whole context of Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is set in ancient times, Shaunkadirishi reached the ashram of Maharishi Soot at Naimisharanya. The sages ask Maharishi that what is the simple remedy for liberation from worldly suffering and sadness, and the achievement of the transcendental goal? Maharishi Soot tells the sages that Narada had asked a similar question to Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu, the creator of the universe, said that he would describe such a vrat (fast), by which all men and women of the world will get freedom from sins, by eliminating poverty, man will live happily by floating in the sea of happiness and wealth. By observing this fast of Shri Satyanarayan Bhagwan, all his wishes will be fulfilled. This is the only way to attain salvation in Kali Yuga. Lord Satyanarayan, one day went to a man in the form of an old man.
After telling him the method of fasting, he became deeply meditative. The poor man decided to observe the fast prescribed by the old man and could not sleep that night. Money and grains started raining in his house. Now he adheres to the fast every month and gets lots of money in alms. When that man, endowed with wealth, fasted regularly every month, many others joined in that fast.
At the same time, an old woodcutter, who had brought wood from the forest, passed by and decided to fast for Lord Satyanarayan. By thinking like this, he got more money for the wood and grains and bought bananas, ghee, milk, curd, wheat flour, and sugar. He lived happily and attained salvation and went to Baikunth Dham. Then, Lord Vishnu tells the story of those people who performed this fast after listening to the Satyanarayan Katha.
In ancient times, a wise and truthful king named Ulkamukh ruled in Kanakpur. He used to worship Lord Satyanarayana by visiting the temple every day and donating a lot of food, clothes, and money to the poor. His palace was filled with wealth and all his subjects were living happily. A rich merchant approached him and asked him about his secret. The king told him the method of fasting and worship. After listening to the story, the king also gave prasad to the merchant. Likewise, the story unfolds into five sections which are known as Satyanarayan Katha.
In the first chapter of the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha book, it has been told that how to worship Lord Satyanarayan. In brief, this method is as follows-
Those who take a vow to worship Satyanarayan should keep a fast throughout the day. Make an alpana, thereafter cleaning the place of worship. Plant a banana tree near the four feet of this post. Install the idol of Shaligram or Thakur Ji or Shri Satyanarayana on this post. While worshiping, first of all, worship Ganapati, then Indradi Dashdikpal and respectively Panch Lokpal, Rama along with Sita, Lakshmana, Radha Krishna. After worshiping them, worship Thakur Ji and Satyanarayan. After this worship Lakshmi Mata and finally Mahadev and Brahma Ji.
After worship, perform an aarti of all the gods and distribute prasad by taking Charanamrit. After serving the food to the priest, you should take your own food after taking his blessings. In their worship, apart from banana leaves and fruits, Panchamrita, Panchagavya, betel nut, betel, sesame, moli, roli, kumkum, durva are used from which the Lord is worshipped. For the worship of Satyanarayana, Panchamrit is prepared by mixing milk, honey, banana, Gangajal, Tulsi leaves, dry fruits, which are very dear to God. In the form of prasad, after roasting the flour in addition to the confectionery, adding sugar to it, a prasad is made, which is called Sattu (Panjiri), it is also enjoyed.
