Tulsi is a sacred plant that is seen almost in every house of Hindu families. It has a plethora of medicinal value. There is a custom or a ritual observed with this plant. It is Tulsi Vivaah.
Tulsi Vivaah is one kind of marriage ceremony in the Hindu system. This ritual is performed among those who are dwelling in the northern part of India. According to the Bengali calendar, Tulsi Vivaah is conducted on moonlight fortnight Ekadashi of the month Kartik.
Tulsi Vivaah is the sacred marriage of the Tulsi plant and Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, or Shaligram Shila. Tulsi Vivaah begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi (eleventh lunar day) and continues till Kartik Purnima. In India, this marriage is conducted only on the eleventh and twelfth day of lunar in Indian Kaartik month.
Tulsi Vivaah is considered one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. This day is marked with the beginning of the wedding season in Hindu society. Women worship Tulsi Vivaah puja or Vrat for their husbands and children's well-being, while unmarried women perform this for getting married to good and honest husbands.
Tulsi is considered a sacred plant in Hindu society because Lord Bishnu got married to her, the incarnation of Devi Lakshmi, on the above said auspicious day. According to legend Goddess Lakshmi took her birth as a woman, Vrinda. She got married to a demon named Jalandhar. Tulsi was a loyal devotee of Lord Vishnu. She worshiped God and continuously prayed for her husband's long life. As a result, Jalandhar became so powerful that no one could defeat him. Lord Shiva realized that as long as his wife Vrinda kept praying for her husband's long life, Jalandhar would be invincible. So Lord Shiva asked Lord Vishnu to undermine Jalandhar. Lord Vishnu taking the form of Jalandhar, deceived Tulsi. Jalandhar then became powerless, and Lord Shiva could kill him.
Knowing this, Tulsi cursed Vishnu and drowned herself in the ocean. Later, Lord Vishnu got married to Tulsi in the next birth in the form of Saligram Shila.
You can perform the Puja from Prabodhini Ekadashi (11th day of Shukla Paksha) in Kartik month (October-November) up to the full moon day of the month. Normally, it is conducted on the 11th or 12th of the lunar day. The day alters from region to region.
